A man and his wife have been charged with the sexual assault of their two children.
They were released on $250,000 bail on Friday.
A 29-year-old man from Winnipeg was charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault.
A 25-year to 40-year old woman from Portage la Prairie was charged under the same statute.
The woman’s attorney told CBC News on Saturday that she was shocked to hear of the charges against the couple.
“They have no history of domestic violence,” said Jeanette Bouchard.
“I don’t think she’s been through that before.
She’s not the type of person to be violent.
She is a very nice person and very caring, and I think she understands how difficult it is for her children.”
According to the court documents, the couple, who are from Winnipeg, met on the dating app Grindr and began having sexual relations with the two children before she became pregnant.
The court documents say the child was born with developmental problems.
Bouchard said that she didn’t know about the charges until contacted by CBC News and the Winnipeg Free Press on Friday morning.
She said she was contacted by the Winnipeg police department in the middle of the night.
Police said that they have received several tips since the alleged sexual assault occurred.
More charges could be on the way after an investigation was launched on Tuesday.
It’s believed that the couple is on a first-name basis with the children and the accused child is referred to as “D.”
Police say the accused, who was arrested Thursday night, has been released on bail.
