Petco has confirmed to News.co.au that a new ‘Pete the Pug’ pet will be arriving in Australia within the next two weeks.
Petco confirmed the news on Tuesday, telling News.au the Pug would arrive within the week.
It comes after Petco announced it would launch the ‘Puppy Pack’ to try to combat a rising cost of dog food and feed.
The Pug, an American bull terrier, was announced earlier this year, which included a pet-sized toy and a plush plush toy.
The new pet would be available in two sizes, from three months old to seven months old.
Pete was a big hit when it was first announced, with pet food companies saying they were already seeing a rise in dog-related complaints.
“We are confident that Pete the Pug will help drive down the cost of pet food,” Petco said in a statement.
“Pete has been a hit with customers and we want to ensure that Petco continues to have a high standard of pet care and quality,” Pet Co chief marketing officer James Hickey said.
PetCo has been looking to reduce costs by expanding its customer base and focusing on pet care.
The company said in February it would introduce a new product that would be called the “Petty Pet” and will be available exclusively in Petco stores and online starting in late April.
“This is our answer to a growing problem,” PetCo chief executive David Gyngell said at the time.
PepsiCo is also trying to improve its pet food supply.
“The Pampers are going to get their Pet PampERS brand Petco-branded products in the next few months and they are also working to expand the range of Petco products across their portfolio,” said a spokesperson.
